Tavira Ciência Viva Centre (CCVT) belongs to the Portuguese network of science centres, Ciência Viva. Aiming at promoting a scientific and technological culture to the general public, this Centre is an interactive space with a permanent exhibition exploring the theme “Learn and Do”. The Centre also has a laboratorial space that promotes experimental science activities and scientific education of students. Partnerships with schools facilitate regular visits to the Centre, allowing the development of hands on activities, complimentary to the themes explored in formal curricula. Thematic training actions and courses directed to teachers are also organized. On a regular basis, the Centre also collaborates in national scientific awareness campaigns (e.g. the Science &Technology week, promoting the contact between researchers and primary level and high school students or the general public); practical workshops, seminars and temporary exhibitions are also usual. Outdoor activities include guided tours that integrate natural, cultural and scientific values of the town’s surroundings. CCVT organizes several activities that engage local citizens and stakeholders to debate relevant themes in science and technology, promoting Tavira as a city of scientific culture. CCVT integrated in the EU project PLACES, and is part of the regional networks for environmental volunteering and environmental education, together with other local actors. CCVT is also the coordinator of environmental education and marine literacy projects (e.g. OPP 2017 – My beach; ALIMAR) and partner for the dissemination of research projects (e.g. EVREST, BALSA, SARDITEMP). Being located in a very touristic region, activities also target tourists, in particular during the Summer.
