Based on the well-described large estuaries of temperate latitudes, it is customarily assumed that the residual circulation in estuaries is density-driven. The SWITCH project will determine the circumstances in which an estuarine residual circulation switches from being density-driven on neap tide to being tidally driven on spring tide.
